Staying MetaConnected to synchronous metacognition

QUESTION: What did you learn? What do you want to learn more about? Did you do anything about it and start to investigate on your own? If so, what resources did you locate? If you didn't, what does it say about your way of learning and motivation? What might you do differently in the future to make your learning and understanding more effective and efficient.

Having the Flu stopped me cold (pun intended) from attending our synchronous class. So I am going to discuss the previous synchronous class as well as approach this from a different angle discussing how I remained connected to the learning through slack and established partnerships with peers in my cohort.

We watched the film Mindwalk that introduced us to systems thinking. This is the kind of movie I love to pause and discuss with pedantic friends like me. I remember making connections to Sonia’s argument across diverse scenes as each “room” or backdrop allowed the actors to transition from one idea to the next. The initial discussion in the clock room connected to the balcony scene. I confess I do not remember all the conversations but I remember discussions about the healthcare system, ethics in politics, and social responsibility to the self versus the common good. I also remember being very vocal in class about the systems and philosophy I recognized and what I didn’t recognise. I don’t believe I could propose these arguments as fluidly as Sonia but think I have my moments and would like to achieve the holistic systems thinking she portrays. I try to engage deeply with my learning in class by listening to my peers and connecting my thoughts meaningfully to theirs. This I think creates a respectful scholastic discourse.

I imagine that I missed out on an active class discussion the next time we met synchronously and I was looking forward to hearing which systems my peers latched onto or were curious about. I reached out to three close peers in the cohort and we chatted both through Zoom and Slack about which systems we were thinking of inspecting more closely for our assignments. It has taken me a while to narrow down which system I want to look into further. My initial blog post listed three systems I have worked within: 1) the Private Baptist Hospital system, 2) the public independent K-12 school system, and 3) Learning Centers in Higher Education. As follow-up action items from my initial thinking, I drafted a systemigram of the ideal Learning Center model for my institution and discussed the system plan with peers as a Board member at the annual conference for the National College for Learning Center Association last week. I located more human resources than academic in this initial phase of discovery but hope to continue exploring through research.
