Focus on designing participant learning tools

The Academic Integrity and Writing Support lesson I am building for first-time-in-college students is designed as a flipped model including asynchronous, self-paced discovery, followed by synchronous review and discussion, and asynchronous application of concepts. I recognize that this module may also be used as a refresher training for upperclassmen particularly in the Writing and Communication Courses. In order to accommodate diverse audience types, this program will use a blend of media types.

The learning objectives of this lesson are to define academic integrity and the values associated with it, recognize academic misconduct and the ways it is sometimes rationalized, identify common misconduct pitfalls and the larger problem these offences create, and recognize the resources available to students and how to use them. Many facilitator will be needed to facilitate the discussion and assess the learning; therefore I am planning to provide the following aids:

  • Facilitator technology guide, pre & post checklist, and job aid

  • Key discussion points and extended examples of ethical breach, plagiarism, and writing support techniques/technologies

  • Prezi presentations with notes

  • Bibliography of resources

Participant packages that have been effective are guided worksheets, topic-based resources guides and directories, and branded welcome portfolio binders. I have never reviewed a PowerPoint post presentation or read through a manual without a facilitated key points guide.

I have developed a few digital packets mostly for the 100+ student employees in the Center for Academic Learning Support. The largest effort was in building a Google Site across our various academic support programs including Collections, Library, Supplemental Instruction, Studio, and Writing. This site provides basic information for program descriptions, location and hours of services, individual job expectations, relevant technology tools, safety protocols, and pre-training for topics such as:

  • Professionalism, Customer Service, & Setting a Good Example

  • Ethics

  • Title IX

  • Notice of Nondiscrimination & Abuse

  • Safety Protocols

  • Interacting with Difficult Students
